If you are looking for a small area to learn about animals, have mom’s group, preschool or other group that would like to meet some friendly animals (many are rescues), The West Valley Petting Zoo is the place to go! Owner Carolyn also will bring animals to your location.
West Valley Petting Zoo has limited hours, as owner splits time between Surprise and northern Arizona (and brings her animals), plus she has a full time job. Hours are available on Sundays and one other day a week, but you must get in contact with her to schedule a time. You can do this through their Facebook Page!
We were able to check out a few different types of goats at first. The goats were very friendly, and the kids got to feed and pet them. Dimples LOVES animals, so this was a great experience for him. It’s important to keep your kids calm so the animals stay calm as well. Be wary as there may be poop (goats aren’t really “potty trained” so make sure you wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy!
The kids got to check out a few rabbits that sat on their lap. Carolyn provided a little blanket so they wouldn’t get scratched. The rabbits weren’t very excited to be held, but allowed a little petting. Carolyn also had a few babies that were up for adoption as well!
The kids were able to hold a chicken, which is harder than it looks! This chicken was just so beautiful! The kids did a good job trying to hold the chicken. There were others that they could pet as well.
The kids also got to go in the bird cage to hold these guys-or really, let them land on their arms. Dimples once again was the most calm, and one of the birds even pooped on him. Like any four year old boy, Dimples loved it. We did go in the “cage” area to hold the birds, so you will want to make sure your kids don’t go in and out and let the birds escape. These guys really preferred adults and would just land on me. Carolyn provided gloves for the little ones so they wouldn’t get a scratch. It tickled, but wasn’t really scratchy!
The kids also got to ride on this lovely horse. It was a super mellow horse that was easily led around. We did have to lift the kiddos up, so just be prepared. I would say four and up would be best suited for the horse. Dimples and the other kids did really well on the horse, which would make my mom proud! Carolyn also has a few other horses, but they are just for watching-one is very young and not trained and the other is an injured horse that is a rescue.
We also got to check out the alpacas!
Two alpacas were greeting us and they were pretty friendly to pet. They are so cute!
And, a few of the goats followed us around-they were fun to watch and really were good with the kids!
Carolyn is very open to different groups and loves having kids come out! It is at her residence, unless you ask her to meet you at a location for a petting zoo appearance! Address is about Waddell and 185th Ave-but message her for exact times and address!
