Book Review-Bev Galligan, Author
Finding a wholesome book that teaches good values with a great story
I had my nine-year-old, Munchie, read Has Anyone Seen Me before I read it. We then discussed the book afterward to come up with this book review.
The book follows a young boy who feels that he is invisible to the world. He wishes that he could be like the other people he sees in his life, and he explains why he wishes he could be like them. Our young narrator finds his own shortcomings and continually compares himself to these other children. Throughout the book, we find him comparing himself to others and diminishing his own self worth.
The young boy references many characters in the book and mentions why he is jealous of them. However, he also finds they have many secrets they are hiding as well. In an effort to fit in with one of the characters, the young boy disregards many of his morals and makes an unwise decision. He finds that he has not only embarrassed himself but has disappointed his parents and teachers.
By the end of the book, we see that the main character has made a resolution to befriend most of the characters he has interacted with. He is able to see past their exterior and get to know the real person. My son, Munchie, really felt that he was a little bit of each of these characters rolled into one. The author did an amazing job weaving different personality traits into characters that children indentify with.
Who this book is good for
This book is a nice, light read for children in grades 2nd through 5th grade. My third grader easily read through it in about an hour. This book is a great book to read aloud with your child or children, and may also be good in a classroom or in a Sunday School class. Has Anyone Seen Me? Is a great book to discuss empathy and sympathy for others. I highly recommend this book for parents who are looking for a book that will strike up meaningful thoughts and conversation with their young boys.
