Four Peaks Mining Company

If you have walked past Four Peaks Mining Company in the OdySea Complex and peaked in but have been afraid to go in with your kids because it looks like there are breakable things, you aren’t alone.

I passed Four Peaks Mining Company many times.

But, since I only had Giggles and saw a sign that said “Free mining”, I thought, well, I might as well take a look! And, I am so glad we went in. The staff was not only welcoming to kids, but very happy to answer questions, tell some history of mining in Arizona and show us the little cave they have!

But first, the jewelry!

They have so many pieces of amazing jewelry to look at! There was even a tree of Jewelry, and other things to decorate your house!

The mining

There is a little cave that is at the back of the store. Obviously, it isn’t a real cave, but it is made to look like one. It actually reminded me of Bearizona .

You can put on a little helmet that has a headlamp to go “into the mine”.

There are clipboards with different rocks that you can find throughout the mine-like a little “hunt”. The Rocks are not loose, so you can’t bring them home. They are attached to the cave walls. Each of these sheets has 10 types of rock/minerals to find and there are 30 in total. You can do it as many times as you would like.

A few different types of gems!

Of course, I had to take a picture of the Copper as we are the Copper State!

You could also buy gems/stones to bring home. We decided to bring home Geodes for the boys to crack since they weren’t able to come with us on our tour of OdySea. It took them about two hours to break them, so the $6.00 investment was a great one for me!

This Geode even looked like a heart when it was cracked open. Perfect for Valentines.

What are Geodes you might ask? Rocks made out of limestone on volcanic ash beds. Inside they are lined with crystals! The word “Geode” comes from the Greek meaning “earthlike”.

We had a lot of fun at the Four Peaks Mining Company store and learned a little bit about different types of rocks and gems found in Arizona, plus I found a great place to get Arizona specific gifts for friends and Family. You can also visit some of the other places in the OdySea Complex while you are there, such as OdySea Aquarium, OdySea Mirror Maze, Pangaea Land of the Dinosaurs, BumperBoats and Polar Play, amongst many restaurants!
